The 1.25-m Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) baseline design consists of an on-axis Gregorian telescope containing parabolic primary, elliptical secondary, and fold-flat tertiary mirrors. Only 3 arcmin of the total 32 arcmin solar image is seen by the secondary, in order to reduce the secondary mirror heat load. The SOT Facility Definition Team at the Goddard Space Flight Center has recommended a scientific instrument payload consisting of (1) a visible light universal filter polarimeter, (2) a visible light spectrograph, (3) an ultraviolet spectrograph, and a co-observing Solar Extreme UV Telescope and Spectrograph. Attention is given to the extent to which projected SOT capabilities would facilitate the study of solar phenomena and physical processes over the range of their spatial and temporal scales.
