The unique characteristics of the South Pole for solar observations are described with specific attention given to cloud cover, seeing measurements, and sky transparency. Historical observational data are reviewed including results of summer observations over the last decade, and unique characteristics are identified for continuous high-quality solar observations. The unique limiting conclusion relates to the paucity of data regarding the precise knowledge of the seeing conditions required for sophisticated observations.
