A statistical study reveals that the stratospheric circulation response to the El-Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) significantly alters between opposite phases of the 11-year solar cycle. During solar cycle maxima, the ENSO impact is insignificant throughout the whole extratropical lower stratosphere. During solar cycle minima, the ENSO strongly impacts the lower stratosphere, with the response resembling the Northern Hemisphere annular mode (NAM) pattern in geopotential height fields and in zonal mean zonal flow. It explains the low statistical significance of the relationships between the NAM and ENSO when the data are not stratified according to solar cycle maximum and minimum.
