Experiment S 99, designed to observe solar protons with energies between 2 and 100 MeV as well as alpha particles with energies between 4 and 240 MeV, was successfully flown aboard the satellite ESRO-4 between November 22, 1972 and April 15, 1974. Two solid-state particle telescopes were used in the instrument. The energy intervals for both particle species were logarithmically divided into six channels. Three proton events were recorded in 1973: on April 12/th, April 29th, and September 7th, respectively. A description is given of the design and operation of the instrument. For each of the three events, polar cap proton registrations are presented for approximately every sixth orbit.
