Analytical methods for the detection and identification of very low frequency gravity modes in the solar oscillation are presented. The relative ease of detection of 5-min p-modes is contrasted with the difficulties posed by noisy spectra, visibility problems, complex mode signature, side lobes, and rotational splitting from g-modes. Theoretical criteria are developed and shown to permit the simultaneous detection and identification of g-modes from data of the quality presently available, and improved results are predicted if longer-time-series observations can be obtained. Graphs, digrams, and tables are provided.
