Measurements of the wavelengths of Fe XXV and XXIV lines in solar flare X-ray spectra in the range 1.85 to 1.87 A are reported and compared with laboratory spectra of the He-like Fe ion resonance line and its j satellite. High-resolution solar flare spectra were taken during the solar maximum of October to November, 1970 in the range 1.70 to 1.95 A by the Intercosmos 4 satellite. Fe XXV resonance, intercombination and forbidden lines and satellite Fe XXIV lines corresponding to 18 transitions are identified with theoretical values to within 0.0004 A. High-resolution laboratory spectra obtained with a high-voltage discharge-triggered plasma-point vacuum spark are shown to be in good agreement with solar spectra in the range 1.85 to 1.95 A, and wavelengths of the Fe XXV resonance line for the transition 1s 2p (1P1) to 1s2 (1S) and its j satellite for 1s 2p2 (2D 5/2) to 1s 2p2 (2P 3/2) are derived from a comparison of experimental and theoretical data. Spectra in the range 1.7 to 1.8 A from a laser-pulse-triggered vacuum spark discharge support the existence of K beta lines from Fe ions of ionizations states II to XVII in the solar flare spectrum.
