Structures in the Sun's atmosphere are reviewed. The essential role of these structures in the physics of the Sun's convective zone and atmosphere is stressed, and it is emphasized that the same physics is crucial in a number of other systems of planetological or astrophysical interest. The problem of solar coronal heating is considered, and its relation to the solar wind acceleration problem is discussed. The diagnosing of nonthermal heating phenomena is shown to involve elaborate observations with high spectral, spatial and temporal resolution. It is concluded that the SOHO project appears to be the best step to take.
