The image of the chromosphere in the helium D3 line is constructed with the use of 350 spectrograms of the Sun's west limb acquired during the total eclipse on 31 Juli 1981. An automatic photometer for high-speed scanning of plates is described. The processing technique used in the image construction is given. An additional surface brightness maximum at heights of about 300 km is found along the entire image in the D3 line.
