Recent studies have demonstrated that nitrate ion accumulation in Antarctic firn and ice cores varies with the long-term record of solar activity. In particular, nitrate concentrations in smoothed, time equivalent portions of cores from the South Pole and Vostok Stations extending back over 1200 years appear to show the major features of the curve of carbon-14 production derived from tree rings. The present investigation is concerned with a comparison of available solar and geomagnetic data with recent nitrate deposition in polar snow. Both firn core data and shorter-term, higher-resolution snow pit records are found to indicate that solar processes influence nitrate accumulation at the South Pole. Atmospheric NO(x) production, the precursor of NO3(-), is determined by a number of factors which can be related to the solar cycle.
