The diffusion of Na into quartz (thin slabs) was studied under the driving force of a concentration gradient (without a d.c. field) with the use of i.r. measurements and neutron activation analysis. In the course of a saturation process, Na + replaces Li + in certain defect sites in the quartz structure. However, much more Na can be driven into crystals than the initial content in Li. Studying the saturation at different temperatures (400-1000°C), for the saturation concentration c , the relation, c log T [° C ] was found. Calculations of the diffusion coefficients were based on a simple one-dimensional model; a good agreement was found experimentally. The relation D = 3.8 × 10 -2 exp (-24,500/ RT ) describes the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient.
