Both the small-scale and large-scale properties of solar features, such as sunspots and the solar corona, are influenced strongly by the small-scale structure of the underlying magnetic field. Even some global properties of the Sun, such as variations of the Sun's irradiance, depend on the local properties of small-scale magnetic features. We briefly describe these dependences, as well as recent results concerning the small-scale magnetic elements deduced from radiation MHD simulations and spectropolarimetric observations. The simulations reproduce a number of sensitive observational tests and explain, e.g. why G-band images allow only a part of the magnetic flux to be identified.
