Localized, small-scale (~ 1 RE) density enhancements (> 50%), associated with the magnetic field variations are observed in the magnetosheath by the Cluster spacecraft. S/C potential measurements enable us to obtain high time-resolution, multipoint measurements of the density, which are used to estimate the three-dimensional topology and orientation of these plasmoids. The determination of the plasmoid topology allows us, via scaling laws, to compare to laboratory results and predict if and by what mechanism the plasmoids may penetrate through the magnetopause. This transfer of momentum, energy and plasma may be an important contribution during northward IMF conditions. We also study some of the detailed properties of the plasmoids, to address the question of how they are generated. One finding is that they have a tendency to be aligned in the general direction of the bow shock and magnetopause. New measurements in the solar wind indicate that similar structures may be found already in the solar wind, but that they are possibly deformed and compressed when passing the bow shock.
