The project SISSI studies trace gas distributions and nonthermal excitation mechanisms in the mesosphere and the lower thermosphere of the Earth (50 to 200 km). The main SISSI payload is an Ebert-Fastie type IR spectrometer cooled with liquid helium. The energy budget of the upper Earth's atmosphere is essentially determined by IR radiation cooling. The preliminary results justify the expectation of new findings.
