I listened to his broadcasts or, maybe, to repeats. That growling Yorkshire voice, with its calm assurance and measured pace was enthralling. I had never even considered the nature of the Universe before, but he made me think hard about it then. Although I have often disagreed with his ideas since, I remain a fan, especially of those broadcasts and their sense of conviction and authority. Yet he never condescended: he addressed you, the listener, as someone interested enough to listen and worthy of respect for that, if nothing else.
