A description is given of the results of simultaneous optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the optical counterpart of the AM Her type X-ray binary 2A0311-227. The optical flux and the radial velocities and strengths of the emission lines vary regularly with the 81 minute orbital period. During a small fraction of the orbital cycle the emission lines at wavelengths greater than 5500 A turn into absorption. A qualitative model explaining the data is presented.
