3D reconnection in presence of guide fields poses challanges different and new form pure antiparallel 3D reconnection (already a challenging problem in itself). We consider specifically 3 aspecs. First, we expand on our previous work on the evolution of an initially localized reconnection site into a full extended x-line (G. Lapenta et al, GRL, 33, L10102, 2006). Such x-lines have recently been observed by multi satellite observations (T. D. Phan et al, NATURE, 439, 175-178, 2006). The role of guide felds is crucial in the evolution of an x-line and has not been considered before in full 3D PIC simulations. Second, we consider the onset of reconnection in a fully 3D system with guide fields, including the effect of current aligned instabilities and the percolation of multiple resonance planes (planes where k dot B is zero). Finally, we consider how the boundary conditions affect the 3D evolution of reconnection using recently developed open boundary conditions similar to Daughton et al, PoP, 13, 072101 (2006).
