The primary mode of observation for the ESO multimode instrument is wideband long or multislit spectroscopy, using a dichroic beam splitter behind the slit plane to send the light to the blue and red arms of the spectrograph. Due to atmospheric dispersion, stars deform to spectra with the blue end pointing toward the zenith. The atmospheric dispersion correctors here proposed are mounted on low friction bearings in a six-position wheel resembling that of Airy (1869).
