The equivalent widths measured by Merrill et al. (1937) for the bands 5780, 5797, 6284 A and the Na D2 line and those measured for the 4430 band by Beals and Blanchet (1938) are analyzed. It is shown that almost all of the diffuse interstellar bands are closely correlated to each other. The close correlations established between the band strengths, color excesses, and polarizations indicate that these bands are physically correlated to interstellar grains. The partial correlation coefficients obtained support of the hypothesis of embedded or trapped atoms, ions, molecules, or impurities in interstellar grains.
