Questions concerning the absorption and scattering of starlight by dust are considered along with the processes involved in the growth and the destruction of interstellar dust. A review of studies regarding the polarization of starlight by dust particles is presented, taking into account hypotheses concerning the alignment of dust particles with respect to the galactic magnetic field, the refractive index of the interstellar medium, and mechanisms involved in particle rotation. Attention is also given to the emission of infrared radiation by dust particles.
