Horizontal wind fluctuations between heights of 61 and 105 km, obtained from MF radar measurements at Saskatoon, are found to exhibit properties characteristic of a transient internal gravity wave field having experienced directional filtering after traversing the troposphere and the lower middle atmosphere. The pronounced N-S anisotropy of the fluctuations suggests that the perturbations are mainly generated by vertically propagating gravity waves. Seasonal changes of gravity wave source strength and distribution are noted. The shorter and longer period fluctuation intensities show significant differences in their seasonal variation in the mesosphere, and eddy dissipation rates estimated from horizontal wind fluctuations also exhibit changes with height and season.
