A method is presented for identifying short-lived stellar flares on the basis of a statistical analysis of group count declinations in Poisson and Gaussian photon fluxes. Estimates of integrated amplitudes and flare duration as well as their rms errors are given. Phantom flares induced both by scintillations of the earth atmosphere and by instrumentation interference are investigated.
