S-bursts and other short-lived events in Jupiter's decametric radio spectra were observed at the Kiiminki site of the Aarne Karjalainen Observatory between August and October 1985 using an acoustooptical radio spectrograph with a charge-coupled device readout. The lifetimes of the regular S-bursts are of the order of tens of milliseconds, with those occurring in quasi-periodic trains being mostly below 20 ms. Short-lived bursts that do not drift in frequency may occur in S-trains and at the vertex of tilted V-patterns. Vertex bursts have lifetimes comparable to those of the S-train bursts, and it is suggested that a significant proportion of the vertex bursts have lifetimes of less than 2 ms.
