The Livermore system of vectorized shell model codes is used to study the Gamow-Teller strength functions for a variety of nuclei whose weak interaction properties are of interest in astrophysics. The Lanczos method is used to diagonalize a model space consisting of low seniority excitations (including all states directly populated by the Gamow-Teller operator) with a realistic finite range effective interaction. The effects of model space truncation are systematically investigated for each nucleus. The results of these calculations are discussed in connection with problems in stellar evolution, supernova collapse, and nucleosynthesis.
