Hitherto unknown sources of ionization were searched for in several H II regions, and information on the internal extinction within these regions was derived from image tube photographs in the R and I passbands. Extinction values for several condensations in the southern extension of W 3 show a distinct decrease from north to south, from 11.3 to 4.1 mag. Two relatively bright stars were observed near the main nebula in NGC 7538, which are of spectral type O 7. On the basis of this classification and magnitudes, the most probable distance of NGC 7538 was computed to be 2.2 kpc. A real cluster of more than 100 stars or the core of a more extended association was found in a field of about 3 arc min diameter in M 17 near the peaks of the extended infrared and radio emissions. Luminosities of at least six stars inside the cluster are compatible with spectral types O or early B.
