The design of experiments to simulate solar-flare phenomena is examined. The dimensionless parameters of Syrovatskii (1979, 1981), which characterize the high-conductivity plasma flow near a singular magnetic-field line, are used to analyze the significance of the differences between the values of various parameters in solar flares and those obtained in the laboratory (at UC Riverside, Lebedev Physical Institute, and UCLA). The experimental/observational parameters and the calculated dimensionless quantities are listed in a table and discussed. It is concluded that laboratory demonstrations of current-sheet formation, stability, and explosive disruption constitute valid limited simulations of solar flares.
