Several kinds of instruments used in the Parkfield Experiment that monitor ground deformation are examined. These include creepmeters, a two-color geodimeter, and water well heights. Creepmeters are a 30-m extensometers that span the fault zone and are sensitive to fault slip within the fault zone. The two-color geodimeter is a precise electronic distance measuring instrument capable of measuring baseline lengths to 0.1 parts-per-million. The heights of water in wells can be used as borehole strainmeters if the well responds to the solid earth tide. The power spectrum from each instrument type is characterized, and the signal used for detection is discussed along with the application of the matched filter to estimate thresholds of detectability.
