Self-organized criticality is a general framework to understand the occurrence of power laws in nature. It is concerned with slowly driven systems which develop long-range correlations spontaneously, without the fine-tuning of external parameters. As a pulsar slowly spins down, the centrifugal support of its crust gradually weakens. The possible application of SOC to phenomena such as pulse glitches and mode switching will be discussed.
