Non-linear interactions between small fluid elements, magnetized or otherwise, in an energetically open system facilitate the formation of large coherent stable structures. This is known as self-organization. The authors interpret solar granulation on all scales and the formation and evolution of solar active regions to be the result of self-organization processes occurring in a turbulent medium.
