Studies of space plasmas have improved the understanding of phenomena in astrophysical plasmas radically. In this context, we focus on three examples. Magnetic seed fields of sufficient order of magnitude in the early Universe could be explained by the same self-magnetization mechanism which has previously discussed in context with magnetic fields in the ionosphere of Venus. Studies regarding strongly fluctuating magnetic fields in the Earth's magnetopause became the basis for a first self-consistent explanation of filamentary magnetic fields in the Universe. Magnetic reconnection, well known in solar and magnetospheric physics, was found to be a key acceleration process e.e. in stellar or galactic jets.
