A three-dimensional seismic tracing scheme was applied to resolve the complex inside-structure of the subducting plate and it was found that a model with a rapid increase in P-wave velocity in the upper few tens of kilometres thickness and a gradual decrease within the rest of the plate explains the observation better than models with velocity maxima at different locations.
