Results of investigations into seismic anisotropy of sedimentary rocks in the suprasalt stratum of the Caspian depression at shallow depths are presented. Data on shear waves with different polarization are used for identifying the anisotropy of elastic properties. Observations are carried out in uncased boreholes using a three-component magnetically oriented seismic device. Shear-wave sources of fixed polarization are situated within the network of profiles crossing the borehole in different directions. A new method of polarization filtering is used for the exact determination of two interfering shear-wave arrival times. Cross-sections of shear-wave group-velocity surfaces are plotted from the data on the Albian rocks on the northwestern slope of the Dossor salt dome. A more complex character of anisotropy than the one usually accepted within the limits of traditional transversely isotropic models is shown. Our standpoint is than an orthorhombic model is to be used to successfully simulate the properties of the medium.
