The small-scale structure of the Earth's interior is more difficult to access than the big picture. In the Bullerwell Lecture 2009, Sebastian Rost discusses seismic studies targeting small-scale structure at the core-mantle boundary, including areas containing partially molten mantle material and the remnants of subducted slabs, and assesses how they influence aspects of the Earth's dynamics.
