Third-generation segmented mirrors for atmospheric compensation in telescopes of short-wavelength operation typically involve some 500 segments. Excellent optical figure, wavefront fitting, and dynamic performance are obtained, in conjunction with low costs, since the inherent modularity of a segmented mirror eliminates the conventional optical fabrication problems associated with large optics. It now appears feasible to produce segmented wavefront correctors having more than 10,000 segments, for compensation of short wavelength systems with apertures of 4 m or more. Segmented mirrors are noted to lend themselves readily to high temperature applications, since the expansion induced is restricted to changes in the figure of an individual segment.
