Thermospheric neutral density exhibits seasonal variation with maximum during equinox seasons, a primary minimum near June solstice and a secondary minimum near December solstice; and the amplitude and phase of this seasonal variation change from year to year. Long-term satellite drag data indicate that upper atmospheric forcing alone (the sun-earth distance, large-scale circulation, and geomagnetic forcing) can not fully account for the observed behavior of density seasonal variation; it is likely that lower atmospheric forcing also contributes to density seasonal variation in the thermosphere, for example, through composition disturbance by breaking gravity waves in the mesosphere. We investigate mechanisms of the seasonal variation using thermospheric neutral density data derived from 5000 space objects from 1967 to 2007. Statistical relations between amplitude and phase of density seasonal variation and geophysical conditions such as solar activity, altitude, and geomagnetic activity are first examined; contributions from lower atmospheric forcing are then investigated, with an emphasis on possible modulation of seasonal amplitude and phase by Quasi-Biannual-Oscillation (QBO).
