A device which employs a magnetooptical filter in the Na-D lines for measurements of lower order solar oscillations is described. Light from the sun passes through two crossed polarizers, yielding a narrow spectral region coincident with the resonance lines of the interior vapor between the polarizer. The longitudinal Zeeman effect is utilized to split an absorption spectral line into circularly polarized components. Various prisms can be used to split the incoming light, and an advantage is noted in having a stable reference wavelength, determined by the inner vapor; Faraday rotation increases the intensity by absorbing light from adjacent wavelengths. Studies of a quiet solar region using Na-filtergrams are cited to demonstrate detection of 5 min oscillations; further studies are continuing on the l equals one and m equals zero modes. A schematic for the instrument is presented, and effects of misalignment are discussed.
