We report on an attempt to detect certain lines of CO and CH molecules, as well as the C I (^3^P_0_-^3^P_1_,λ = 610 microns) fine- structure line, red-shifted into the millimeter-wave range, toward distant quasars. We have investigated five dense gas-dust complexes, detected in the visible and, in certain cases, in the 21-cm H I line, projected onto the quasars PKS 0528-250, PKS 1157+014, PKS 1229-021, PKS 0336-0142, and PKS 0458-02. We obtain upper limits on optical depth and molecular abundances. Weak CO lines may have been detected in two cases: PKS 1157+014 and PKS 1229-021.
