The possible existence of strangelets has been hypothesized for a long time but has not been confirmed experimentally. Our experiment aims to search for strangelets in lunar soil samples, where the predicted concentration of one oxygen strangelet per 1016 1017 normal oxygen atoms is 104 times higher than that on earth. The tandem Van-de-Graaff accelerator at Yale is used as an atomic mass spectrometer to separate possible strangelets from normal nuclei. By exploiting the strangelets' signature low charge to mass ratio, our own designed detection system can identify strangelets at a sensitivity level of better than 1 per 1017 atoms.
