So far, only nitrogen and methane have been detected in the atmospheres of Pluto and Triton, but carbon monoxide is expected as well given its presence in solid form on both bodies and its relatively large volatility. We have conducted a new search for CO on the two objects. Using the 30-m IRAM telescope, we searched for the CO(2-1) rotational line at 230 GHz during several nights in May 2009; however the data were hampered by strong galactic confusion. On July 4th, 2009, we used the CRIRES / VLT instrument with adaptive optics to search for CO on Pluto in its 3-0 vibrational band and on Triton in the 2-0 band, at a resolution of 60.000. The data are of good quality, particularly for Triton. Results will be presented at the meeting.
