We review recent research in the field of phosphor and scintillator materials used for X-ray detection. We describe parameters and characteristics crucial for performance of the materials in applications. Description of materials currently used or intensely studied is provided. We show recent results of radiation damage study of Y3Al5O12:Pr as a novel promising scintillator. Principal applications of scintillators and phosphors are briefly summarized.
