The SCIFER2 rocket was launched over Svalbard on January 18, 2008 into a Poleward Moving Auroral Form (PMAF), reaching an altitude of 1460 km. On the ground, allsky camera images were acquired using a StellaCam II camera, with intensities measured using meridian scanning photometers. On the payload, electron temperature measurements were made above the auroral forms in order to quantify electron heating associated with the soft electron precipitation. Heating of the background electron population by soft electron precipitation is an important step in ion outflow processes, where this heating is thought to support ambipolar diffusion. By combining the various data sets, electron temperatures at various altitudes are compared to auroral luminosity, taking into account both the duration and brightness of the aurora.
