The tectonic evolution of the Earth's lithosphereaffects the behavior and developmentof the planet's atmospheric and oceanographicsystems, yet the nature of theseinteractions presently is understood only inoutline. The Asian monsoon system, whichsustains two-thirds of humanity, appears tobe one of the most dramatic examples ofsuch interactions. However, it is unclear howmuch of its intensity is controlled by slow, solid Earth dynamics and how much is controlledby short-term, potentially anthropogenicallyinfluenced processes.
