Projektgruppe Hale-Bopp Insbruck consisted of about 25 persons. It included students and staff of the Institut fuer Astronomie and amateur astronomers. We collected data with different telescopes and cameras and the new spectrograph. The equipment used ranged from commercial cameras with wide field lenses to the 60 cm telescope located on the roof of the Institute. The bulk of the observations was performed from February to April 1997 yielding a wealth of image and spectroscopic data. Preliminary analysis shows that comet Hale-Bopp was a very active and dynamic object. CCD-Images taken with the Innsbruck 60 cm telescope through B, V, R, and I filters show significant change of the structures in the inner coma from one night to another. Up to 5 dust shell surrounding the nucleus in a concentric manner have been documented on photographic film. Spectra taken with the spectrograph mounted to the 60 cm telescope show strong bands from the C2 and lines from other molecular species like CN acid NH2. -The comparatively high resolution of the spectra (1 AA/pixel) enables us to study the blended structures in more detail. Atomic emission from e.g. [O I] acid in particular Na is also noted. The observed ratios of the emission lines are not constant, but vary as a function of solar distance.
