Cosmological scalar field (quintessence) is one of the most attractive models of the dark energy which causes the deceleration of the Universe expansion. We consider a scalar field with power-law kinetic term and investigate the best fit to observational data. In particular, we found the best fit value for exponent n in the power law in the case of constant potential. For our investigations we used the latest SN Ia data release obtained by SCP, HST [1]. We have studied the degrees of freedom in case of general kinetic and potential terms in the scalar field Lagrangian.
