The joint European International Magnetospheric Study (IMS) balloon project is reviewed. A total of 39 balloons, 29 successfully, were launched from four launch sites in northern Scandinavia. Downwind telemetry stations were in operation in Norway, Iceland, and Greenland. Operational experiences and examples of data summaries are presented. The project goals include an increased understanding of dynamic processes in the magnetosphere such as coupling phenomena between outer magnetosphere and auroral regions and magnetospheric convection patterns. Payload configurations are given, and an example is presented of data taken during X-ray events on July 6, 1979.
