Advances in knowledge of the space environment gained in two decades of work with satellites and space probes are surveyed. The article concentrates on space geophysics and features of the interplanetary medium, with sections discussing: (1) solar physics and the solar wind; (2) properties of the earth's atmosphere; (3) motions of charged particles in a magnetic field; (4) the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The magnetic field carried by the solar wind, interactions of solar wind with the atmospheres and fields of planets other than the earth, effects of an electric field perpendicular to the magnetic field on particle motion, frozen-in field lines, and the earth's magnetosphere, magnetopause, and magnetosheath are among other topics covered.
