Satellite positioning has progressed significantly in the period from 1983 to 1986. Greater reliance has been placed on the technique in surveying applications as well as other areas of geodesy and geodynamics. Based on the results and experiences gained, it appears that Satellite Laser Ranging, Lunar Laser Ranging, TRANSIT positioning and the Global Positioning System will be used in a complementary manner. As currently applied, laser techniques have established absolute positioning and reference systems in a global sense or over large areas, whereas GPS has been used to densify the measurements in local areas, e.g., in the vicinity of a laser ranging or very long baseline interferometry site. A reduction in TRANSIT activity was observed during the reporting period as greater emphasis was placed on GPS. Applications of other techniques to satellite positioning have been developed also, especially directed toward determination of geodetic and geophysical quantities or in support of particular missions, such as oceanographic satellites.
