Scientific paper

Sampling errors in satellite measurements of planetary emission and albedo to space are reviewed. Spectral and field of view (FOV) limitations, angular dependence of radiances from the same scene, and time and space coverage of radiation fields are discussed. Scanning radiometers with narrow FOV, and nonscanning radiometers with wide FOV are considered. Although errors can be investigated by numerical simulation, no overall strategy is available.
