Recently, the ISAAC instrument on the ARGOS satellite has detected metal ions (Mg+ and Fe+) in the ionosphere. In the low latitude ionosphere, the upwelling fountain effect is observed, as well as relatively narrow ion layers. To help understand this data, we have modified the NRL ionosphere code SAMI2 to include metal ions. In this talk we present preliminary simulation results of metal ion dynamics in the low to mid-latitude ionosphere, and compare our results with observational data. \ Research supported by the Office of Naval Research.
