The NRL SAMI2 and SAMI3 ionosphere/plasmasphere codes are used to study outflows of H+, He+ and O+ ions from the topside ionosphere into the plasmasphere and magnetosphere. The SAMI2 (one magnetic longitude) and SAMI3 (global) ionosphere codes include 7 ion species (H+,He+,O+,N+,O2+,N2+,NO+), each treated as a separate fluid, with temperature equations being solved for H+, He+, O+ and e-. While SAMI2 has been shown to reproduce measured seasonal and solar-cycle variations in late-stage plasmasphere refilling rates, those studies did not include polar altitudes or zonal transport. Latest results from the three-dimensional SAMI3 code will be compared to measured ion fluxes and plasmaspheric refilling rates.
