Photometry was used to study several young LMC clusters and to test the
proposition that the IMF of stars in such clusters has a universal
shape. The proposition is not proved or refuted here, but it is shown
that the very steep IMFs found by Mateo (1989) are not real but probably
result from a special aspect of his data reduction.
